How to Prepare for a Competition Spray Tan
Competition tans need tighter scheduling than everyday spray tans. Use this timeline to coordinate peak-week skin prep, show-day color, clothing, rinse timing, and the appointment notes your artist needs.
Step 1
Book the competition service early
Reserve a competition or stage-tan appointment as soon as your show date is firm, especially during spring and summer competition season. Ask whether the studio recommends one base coat, two sessions, or a show-morning touch-up for your division, skin tone, suit color, and federation rules.
Step 2
Share show details with the artist
Send the show date, check-in time, stage time if known, division, suit color, federation tanning rules, hotel or venue logistics, and whether you will need mobile service. A regular appointment note is not enough for stage color; the artist needs the schedule and lighting context before choosing solution depth.
Step 3
Plan hair removal and exfoliation for peak week
Wax at least 48-72 hours before the first tan when possible, and shave 24-48 hours before unless your artist gives a different rule. Gently exfoliate earlier in the week, then stop harsh scrubs before application so skin is smooth without being irritated or oily.
Step 4
Arrive with competition-clean skin
On tan day, skip lotion, oils, deodorant, fragrance, makeup on sprayed areas, and heavy hair product that can run onto the skin. Wear loose dark clothing and slides, and bring anything your artist requested for barrier cream, posing suit coverage, or backstage touch-ups.
Step 5
Protect the first coat
After the base or first coat, avoid sweating, rain, tight waistbands, seat-belt pressure, skin-on-skin contact, and hotel bedding transfer as much as possible. Sleep in loose dark long sleeves and pants if your artist recommends it, and do not apply extra self-tanner over the work unless the artist told you to.

Follow the exact rinse and touch-up plan
Competition formulas vary. Some stage tans are not rinsed before showtime, while other base coats have a specific rinse window. Follow the studio's reminder instead of using a standard everyday spray-tan schedule, and confirm whether pump-up, glaze, or bikini bite changes the timing.
